21-year-old charged with growing cannabis [1]

A 21-year-old man from Hala’ovave has been arrested and charged in relation to the seizure of four cannabis plants on Sunday, 1 November. 

Chief Superintendent Tevita Fifita said today the accused had been charged with possession and cultivation of the illicit plant.

Police had seized the cannabis plants that were grown at his home. He remained in custody to appear at the Nuku’alofa Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 6 November.

This is the third cannabis case in just two-weeks reported by Tonga Police.

Earlier cases

Accused Monitana Niu has been confirmed as the 30-year-old man from Hofoa who was charged in relation to the cultivation of 289 cannabis plants from a Puke plantation on Saturday, 24 October.

He is expected to appear at the lower court on Monday, 9 November.

Moli Tungua Tafuna was the 51-year-old accused charged with possession of 32 packs of marijuana in the CBD on Tuesday, 27 October. He is expected to appear the Nuku’alofa Magistrate’s Court this Friday, 6 November, said Fifita.

Both men have been released on bail upon conditions for the court dates.
