Vava’u Soroban students win trip to Tongatapu [1]

Six young students who topped the written examination in Vava'u's soroban competition on Friday, 24 July would represent Vava'u Primary Schools at the National Soroban Competition in Nuku'alofa next year. 
 
The top students are Tupou Kioa, Siai Fa’aumu and Hala’ovava Samate of Class 3 and ‘Eikipeavale Vainikolo, Mele Safesi and Savelina Tupou of Class 4.
 
Neiafu Government Primary School ranked first again in this year's competition with five of the top six from the school. Siai Fa'amumu is the only student from Liviela Primary School.

Around 300 young students from 19 primary schools from throughout Vava’u competed at the Maamamo’onia Hall at Mailefihi Siu’ilikutapu College.

Regional competitions will be followed by Ha’apai on 6 August, Tongatapu on August 18, 20, 25 and 'Eua on 10 September before the National Soroban Competition in March 2016.

The soroban competition is co-hosted annually by the Embassy of Japan and the Ministry of Education.

Soroban education began in the 1970s in Tonga.
