Tongan athletes at Special Olympics [1]

Four Tongan athletes are competing for the first time at the Special Olympics World Summer Games that held its opening ceremony on 25 July in Los Angeles, USA.

More than 6000 athletes with intellectual disabilities from 165 nations are competing in the Games Olympic type sports from July 25 to August 2.

Vanessa Heleta, the Director of Tonga’s Special Olympic Association, said the athletes are very happy to represent Tonga for the first time at the World Games.

The athletes include star sprinter Tomasi Ma’asi with Fane Helu, Tevita Tilini and Tutaleva Fehoko, who will compete in the 100m and 200m run, shot put and javelin.

Tomasi has previously won three gold medals in the 100m, 200m and 400m at the 2013 Special Olympics, Asia Pacific Games in Australia

The World Summer Games was opened by First Lady Michelle Obama at the LA Colesium on Saturday.
