Fishermen rescued after engine failure [1]

Four fishermen who activated a live beacon on Thursday night, 12 March after their boat’s engine failed have been rescued by a Tongan Navy vessel to Nuku’alofa.

The VOEA Neiafu rescued the fishermen on their boat ‘Ana Manusiu, located approximately 54 nautical miles south of Fua’amotu on 13 March.

Tonga Police said on Thursday 12 March, New Zealand’s Rescue Coordination Centre alerted them that a boat activated a live beacon at 11:56pm.

NZ’s Orion P-3 was immediately dispatched and carried out an aerial search locating the boat and the men on board, at the location where they were rescued.

The VOEA Neiafu has since brought the men and towed back the boat to the capital, said police.
