Special public holiday for Cardinal Mafi [1]

A one-off public holiday on Monday, March 2 this year will be held to honour the appointment of Tonga’s first Cardinal, His Eminence Soane Patita Paini Mafi (53).

The Prime Minister’s Office said today that Cabinet approved the declaration of the public holiday.

“This special decision is a one off based on honouring of the appointment of His Eminence Cardinal to the College of Cardinals of the Catholic Church.”

Cardinal Mafi was appointed by Pope Francis during a consistory, on February 14 at St Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City attended by Queen Nanasipau'u.

He arrived back in Tonga this afternoon.
