Former Chief Justice to return as non-resident judge [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Monday, February 2, 2015 - 18:56

Hon Mr Justice Scott, Tonga’s former Chief Justice will return to the Supreme Court of Tonga as a non-resident judge starting on February 16.

Mr Justice Scott, a British national who finished his term as Chief Justice in November last year will be working part time in the new position, according to the Supreme Court.

The New Zealand Government is supporting judicial salaries including the newly created non-resident judge position for three-years.

In December last year, the New Zealand High Commissioner HE Mark Talbot signed a grant funding agreement with the former Minister of Justice Clive Edwards to support the salaries of one Supreme Court judge until April 2017 and the non-resident judge totaling at NZD$985,000 over the next three-years.

Hon. Mr Justice Paulsen of New Zealand is the new Chief Justice, who started earlier this month with Mr Justice Cato, the second Supreme Court judge.
