Three Tongan police officers left Tonga for Canberra this week to undergo training before their one-year deployment to the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands in November.

The 14th contingent was led by Acting Inspector Halatoa Taufa with Sgt Semisi Motu’apuaka and a woman Senior Constable Lute Tonga. The officers will replace three Tongan police officers who will return home in December after completing their one-year term.

Since 2003, Tonga Police has sent 106 officers to the regional peacekeeping mission. Tonga’s military deployment to RAMSI ended in July last year.

RAMSI is a partnership between the people and Government of the Solomon Islands and 15 countries of the Pacific who arrived in July 2003, at the request of the Solomons to provide support for the enforcement of law and order.
