The closure of the 2014 session of the Tongan Parliament today was a historical occasion as it was Prince Ata’s first parliamentary closing duty and the closure of the fourth and final year in office of the current government, before the upcoming General Election on November 27.
Prince Ata, who was accompanied by Lord Nuku and Lord Ve’ehala, read out a message from HM King Tupou VI in Parliament House.
The king said important works had been completed during this year's session, which included deliberations on Bills aimed to assist in the country's development and to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
He referred to the natural and economic impacts which affected the country.
"The end result is clear and good in regards to the works achieved during this period. It is imperative that this standard is maintained and to pursue other avenues that could generate more revenue that will not burden but assist people and private businesses," he stated.
The king pointed out the need to establish an industry to manufacture local products to not only support the tourism industry but provide employment for the people particularly youth.
He extended his gratitude to the overseas Governments that had assisted with Tonga’s social and economic development.
The soft closing of parliament was a short solemn and quiet occasion with no music except for the police brass band playing the national anthem.
In attendance were only the members of parliament, some of their spouses and parliament staff.
