Three Tongan fishermen who were rescued in Fiji last month have returned home to Nomuka in Ha’apai on Monday, September 1.

'Elone Taulafo a father in his 50’s, his son Sione and son-in-law Sofele Folau arrived on Friday, August 29 at Fua’amotu International Airport from Suva.

The Acting Prime Minister Hon Samiu Vaipulu welcomed the survivors at the VIP lounge.

Police said today the men reported the engine of their 20ft boat broke down. They then drifted in their boat and were found on a reef near the small island of Oneata in the Lau Group.

On August 21, the men were transported to Suva on a passenger ferry from Oneata where they had been staying since being rescued by divers on 8 August.

The men had been missing in Tonga on July 30 after they left in their boat from Nomuka on a fishing trip.
