Tuesday, March 18, 2014 - 18:21

Two men are currently on trial at the Supreme Court on charges including housebreaking when they allegedly entered an elderly woman’s home at Pahu posing as police officers.

‘Aleki Palanite (32) of Sopu and Michell Tukia (41) of Nualei have pleaded not guilty to two charges each of conducting activity that was not authorized by Tonga Police and housebreaking.

The Crown alleges on February 16, 2013 at 3:00pm the two men entered the home of a 66-year-old woman under the false pretense they were police officers who ewre searching for cannabis.

The court was told the accused who were dressed in plain clothes allegedly told the victim that Tukia was a police officer from New Zealand and Palanite was a Tongan police officer.

The trial by judge alone began on March 17 before Mr Justice Charles Cato continued in Nuku'alofa.

The Crown was to call three witnesses, including the victim, while the two accused were representing themselves in court.
