Man charged over death of cyclist at Hoi [1]

A 61-year-old man from Afa has been charged with manslaughter by negligence after a 62-year-old cyclist died after he was allegedly hit by a vehicle on the evening of February 6 in Hoi, Tongatapu.

Police Commissioner Grant O'Fee said the victim from Kolonga was riding his bicycle on Tangikina Road in Hoi on his way to Kolonga when he was allegedly hit by a vehicle.

He was rushed to Vaiola Hospital but died along the way. The iInvestigation continued while the accused driver remained in custody at the Nuku'alofa Police Station, he said.

The incident was the second road death in Tonga for the year. The first road fatality was a 19-year-old girl who died on January 25, after she allegedly fell from a moving van in Lapaha.
