270 emergency response kits stored in Tonga by the Rotary club were sent to Ha’apai last weekend to aid residents in their recovery from Cyclone Ian.

The emergency response kits, worth $162.000 (NZD) were donated to the National Emergency Office (NEMO) by Rotary New Zealand in partnership with the Nuku’alofa Rotary Club in November last year 2013. The pre-disaster preparations were supported by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Rotary New Zealand (Rotary New Zealand World Community Services) is a New Zealand humanitarian aid company that helps facilitate humanitarian aid projects around the world.

One emergency response kit , packed into a 76 litre durable plastic box, contains items such as a first aid kit, clothing and bedding for a family of four, personal hygiene tools (tooth brushes & pastes, soap, sanity towels), clothesline pegs, candles and matches, a machete, hammer, nails, and shovel. Each kit is worth about NZD600.

The Nuku’alofa Rotary Club has supported the effort and the Fua’amotu Scenic Hotel has provided storage space for the emergency response kits.

The Nuku‘alofa Rotary Club's director of international projects is Dr 'Amanaki Fakakovikaetau.
