Tonga's first registered political party, known as PEDPIN, says its registration this month was a step toward good governance and accountability in the kingdom.

The People's Democratic Party, was registered as an incorporated society on Friday July 1, 2005 in Nuku'alofa, Tonga.

It is the first political party to be incorporated in Tonga, and according to a press release from the party, it is now to be called the People's Democratic Party Incorporated, or PEDPIN.

The secretary of PEDPIN, Semisi Tapueluelu, said that a special meeting would be held on Friday night, July 15, at 'Atenisi Institute to celebrate the incorporation of the party.

Semisi said in a press release that the registration of the party was "...…a step towards Good Governance, Accountability and Transparency."
