Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Monday, November 18, 2013 - 20:36

Some 40 accused who were charged in relation to the violent attack on a home in Tofoa appeared at the Nuku’alofa Magistrate’s Court today.

They are the first of the 151 persons, including 147 students from Tupou College and four adults, who are expected to appear at the lower court in groups of 40 from 18-21 November.

The Deputy Police Commissioner 'Unga Fa’aoa said the others would follow over the next few-days.

The Magistrate's Court stated that the prosecution would disclose all its documents to the defence and to the court.

The accused who are on bail are similarly charged with conspiracy to commit willful damage and unlawful assembly among other charges. The adults, including a Tupou College teacher, two bus drivers and a truck driver, are also facing charges of aiding the criminal damage.

The violent attack at the home on the night of July 18, 2013 left an ex-student Taniela Halahuni in a coma and a Tonga College student Daniel Mahe Jr injured. Both victims have fully recovered.
