Manslaughter case adjourned [1]

Fifita ‘Ofa (34) a mother who is charged with manslaughter in relation to the death of her 14-year-old daughter had her bail extended to appear on October 14, at the Nuku'alofa Magistrate's Court.

She appeared at the lower court on September 30 with her brother Tomasi 'Ofa (37), who is similarly charged with manslaughter, and a 42-year-old woman Mohulamu Toumohuni who is charged with abetment to the offence.

The Police Prosecutor Sifa Latu had disclosed all of the prosecution's papers to the defence and to the court before Magistrate Similoni Tu'akalau adjourned the matter to be mentioned on October 14.

The accused mother was represented by Peau Pifeleti while Teisina Fifita acted for the other two accused. On August 26, the trio were released on bail of $1,000 each with two sureties to appear in court on September 30.

She was immediately charged with manslaughter after her daughter, who suffered serious injuries from alleged severe beatings, died at Vaiola Hospital on August 16, 2013.
