Manslaughter trial for suspended official [1]

A jury trial of a suspended deputy secretary of the Ministry of Justice, who is charged with manslaughter, began at the Nuku'alofa Supreme Court this week.

Vatulele Tuputupu of Niutoua has pleaded not guilty to two charges of manslaughter by negligence and causing death while driving under the influence of alcohol. The victim ‘Ana Toki (47) died after a road accident at Lapaha on August 1, 2011.

The accused is alleged to have been driving under the influence of alcohol in a government car and the victim also from Niutoua, was a passenger.

The jury trial began on September 9 is expected to run for the rest of the week before Mr. Justice Charles Cato.

The accused is represented by Laki Niu, while Sione Sisifa acts for the Crown assisted by Rose Kautoke.
