Tonga’s high speed internet will be on show during a Pacific Islands Chapter of the Internet Society (PICISOC) Conference, PacINET to be held on September 9-13 in Nuku’alofa.

The annual meeting brings internet experts from around the region to discuss ICT development in the Pacific. The theme ‘Gateway of Opportunity’ reflects Tonga’s latest technological advancement with the new fibre-optic cable system that went live on August 22.

Paula Ma’u the Director of the Ministry of Information and Communications said the Government of Tonga in hosting this regional meeting has a chance to showcase Tonga’s transition into a new era of telecommunications.

He said with the cable system now in place introducing faster internet speed, higher capacity and broader bandwidth systems it was fundamental that measures were in place to address the global issues affecting the development of the ICT sector.

“This conference will provide the opportunity to dialogue and discuss resolutions to address ICT impediments especially solutions that will positively impact Tonga and the Pacific Region.”

Issues to be discussed included cyber security, network security, internet governance, policy and internet research in the region among other topics, he said.

PICISOC represents the interests of internet users in the Oceania Pacific Region and meets annually in the different Pacific islands each year.

The meeting hosted by the Ministry of Information and Communications is financially supported by Tonga Communication Corporation (TCC), Digicel Tonga, Office Equipment ICAAN and ISOC the Internet society.
