Prime Minister Tu’ivakano will attend the third annual Polynesia Leader’s Group meeting on 30 August in Auckland.

The Polynesian Leaders’ Group is an international organisation of independent or self-governing territories in Polynesia that was set up in 2011. It comprises eight members Tonga, Samoa, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, Niue, America Samoa, French Polynesia and Tokelau.

According to the Tonga Prime Minister’s Office, the organisation provides a dialogue and cooperation on various regional issues such as “sustainable economic prosperity, observation of democratic values and independence.”

Representatives from Maori and Hawaiian communities will also be present at the meeting to discuss the revival of their cultures.

This meeting precedes the Pacific Islands Leaders Forum Meeting in Majuro, Marshall Islands on September 3-6, 2013. All leaders attending the Third Polynesian Leaders Group will be flown over to the Marshall Islands in a specially charted flight courtesy of the New Zealand Prime Minister, John Key.
