Kali Fungavaka manslaughter trial date to be set next week [1]

A trial date for the Kali Fungavaka manslaughter charges is expected to be set next week at the Supreme Court in Nuku'alofa.

Six accused men, including five policemen have each been charged with manslaughter and an alternative charge of grevious bodily harm, relating to the death of the off-duty New Zealand Police Officer  in Tonga last year.

The accused Police Inspector Kelepi Hala’ufia and Police Constables Salesi Maile, Tevita Vakalahi, Manu Tu’ivai and Fatai Faletau with civilian Semisi Kalisitiane Manu are to appear before Mr. Justice Charles Cato on Monday, August 5  for arraignment of trial date.

On July 5, Justice Cato committed three of the accused Faletau, Tu’ivai and Vakalahi for trial after a Crown appeal against their initial release by a Magistrate.

Kali Fungavaka, died in August last year from injuries received while in Police custody.
