Tonga’s high speed internet is expected to be commissioned on August 21 by King Tupou VI.

Paula Ma’u the CEO for the Ministry of Information and Communication said the fibre-optic cable network would then go live and be available to the public.

In the meantime, the testing of the cable between Tonga and Fiji is progressing with connection to service providers to be done before the commission date, he said.

On June 10 the landing of the first cable in Tonga was marked at the Tonga Cable landing station in Sopu with the arrival of the Ile de Re French Cable ship from Fiji.
