Driver reached for cell phone and drove up power pole wire [1]

A driver who tried to answer her mobile phone has been charged with reckless driving after the car she was driving ran off the road and up a power pole stay-wire at Tofoa, yesterday evening, July 11.
 
The vehicle belonging to the Ministry of Health was left suspended on the wire, on Niumeitolu Road, near Vaiola Hospital.

Chief Inspector Salote Tonga, officer in charge of the Tonga Police Traffic Department said the driver in her 20’s claimed that she was reaching for her ringing cellphone and her foot stepped on the accelerator causing the crash after 6:00pm. There were no injuries.

The Tonga Power Ltd. reported that as a result of the accident one of the stay-wires that holds up the power pole broke and the power line was loose and needed to be fixed. The vehicle had been removed from the power pole.
