Murder accused transferred to Hu'atolitoli [1]

Tevita 'Ahoafi (28) who is charged with the murder of his close relative Sione 'Ahoafi (79) at a home in Ha'avakatolo on May 25, was transferred to Hu'atolitoli Prison on May 31, after being remanded in custody until a date is set for his case to be called at the Nuku'alofa Supreme Court.
The accused who was remanded at the Nukunuku Police Station made his first court appearance before Magistrate Masao Paasi at the Nukunuku Magistrate's Court on May 30.
Police Prosecutor Siofilisi Fifita asked the Magistrate for the transfer to Hu'atolitoli Prison because it was more secure. At the same time, Chief Inspector Tevita Fifita confirmed the accused had been admitted to the Psychiatric ward at Vaiola Hospital in the past.
He said police had seized a piece of timber allegedly used in the crime. The victim was reported to have sustained injuries to the head. and died on the same morning.
Magistrate Paasi accepted the prison transfer and told the accused since he is charged with murder the lower court has no jurisdiction to hear his case which will be submitted to the Supreme Court.
Bail allowed in shooting case
Meanwhile, Viliami Taipaleti (33) of Kolovai who is charged in relation to a shooting at Fo'ui on May 23 was released on bail on May 30 to re-appear in court on June 20.
The accused who was represented by Lord Tupou, was granted bail by Magistrate Masao Paasi at the Nukunuku Magistrate's Court.
Police have charged him with four counts that include causing grevious bodily harm and possession of a firearm without a license.
The 48-year-old male victim, who was allegedly injured on his upper left arm from the gunshot, has been released from Vaiola Hospital.
