Power prices up by over 10.8 percent [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Monday, April 15, 2013 - 21:09.  Updated on Monday, September 9, 2013 - 18:40.

Tonga's electricity price will increase by 8.78 seniti tomorrow, April 16, John van Brink, the CEO for Tonga Power Ltd announced today.

The price of electricity will go up from 85.27 seniti per kWh to 94.5 seniti per kWh - an increase of 10.82%.

John said that the increase is due to a continuing rise in the price of diesel during the past few months. The price of fuel for Tonga has gone up by 20% since August last year.

The government has agreed to subsidize the first 100 kWh by 8.78 seniti per kWh for all Tonga Power electricity consumers and the subsidy will be reviewed on a monthly basis.

John said that the Maama Mai solar farm has reduced Tonga's annual diesel consumption by about 500,000 litres, or around 4% of annual diesel consumption, since the $NZD7.9 million solar farm opened in July last year.
