Tongan protest march set for May 26 [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Thursday, May 19, 2005 - 17:15.  Updated on Friday, May 9, 2014 - 11:40.

The Shoreline Protest March, that was scheduled for May 21 has been postponed again to May 26, and the march organisers have decided not to camp outside the Palace.

Originally, the march was going to be on May 7 with an ongoing camp demanding a response from the King.

'Akilisi Pohiva said that one of the reasons for the new postponement was so that the Chairman of the Board of Shoreline, Crown Prince Tupouto'a, and the Director, Sosefo Ramanlal, would be in Tonga.

'Akilisi said that the march would start soon after the opening of parliament on May 26. Marchers would start gathering at the St Andrews School compound, Hala Alaivahamama'o, at 10.30 am., and

people march in groups, from Vava'u, Ha'apai, Niua, 'Eua and Tongatapu.

The route for the march is planned along Hala Taufa'ahau, turning left at Hala Salote, and turning right at Hala Tu'i to the Palace Office.

'Akilisi said that the original idea for marchers to camp outside the palace until they received a response from the King had been cancelled, instead they would present the letter of petition to the King's Private Secretary and then leave.
