Police manslaughter case adjourned to March 11 [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Monday, January 21, 2013 - 18:11.  Updated on Monday, September 9, 2013 - 18:40.

The case against two police constables who are charged with manslaughter in relation to the death of 'Inoke Finau Vala Pepa (20) in Vaini, was adjourned to March 11 at the Nuku'alofa Magistrate's Court.

Police Prosecutor Mema Latu said the two accused appeared at the lower court today Monday, January 21, and were further released on bail until March 11.

He said the adjournment would allow him to prepare papers to be submitted to Magistrate Salesi Mafi, who will decide whether there is sufficient evidence for the case to be submitted to the Supreme Court.

The two accused Samisoni Taufa and Sefo Masalu are facing charges of manslaughter and grevious bodily harm in relation to the victim's death after a fight at Vaini on Friday 16 November 2012.

In December last year a third police officer Halafe'iloaki Pule'anga who was initially charged with the two accused was acquitted after the police prosecutor offered no evidence.
