Vaipua Bridge in Vava'u reopens on December 14 [1]

Vaipua Bridge which provides a vital short cut to Neiafu for the people living in the western district of Vava'u will be opened on Friday 14 December by Crown Prince Tupouto'a 'Ulukalala.

Mr Xu the First Secretary of China's Embassy in Nuku'alofa said today the bridge was built with a grant fund from the People's Republic of China amounting to $10 million pa'anga.

He said the bridge was reconstructed with cement started in 2010 and was carried out by China Railway Fifth Bureau Company.

The opening ceremony will be held at 4pm tomorrow. Guests will include Prince Ata, the Prime Minister Lord Tu'ivakano, the Chinese Ambassador HE Mr Wang Donghua and Tongan Cabinet Ministers.

The Vaipua bridge was declared unsafe in 2007 and collapsed before China pledged to finance its reconstruction in 2008.
