Tonga Police reported three accidental deaths in the last four days, including a drowning in 'Eua, a road death in Vava'u, and a suicide at Pelehake in Tongatapu.

Police Commissioner Grant O'Fee said today that a five-year-old girl drowned around 6pm on Monday 3 December at the harbour in 'Ohonua, 'Eua. There was a family gathering and the little girl disappeared for a few minutes and was found to have drowned. She was understood to have been visiting families from New Zealand, he said.

Road death

In Neiafu, Vava'u a 33-year-old man, identified as Moeaki Malimali of Talihau, died at Prince Ngu Hospital on Friday morning 30 November, after being injured in a car crash five days earlier.

Commissioner O'Fee said the accident occured on Sunday 25 November when a vehicle with five people travelled west along Vaipuna Road and crashed into a lamp post. Alcohol was involved.

The driver and the victim who was a passenger were injured and taken to Prince Ngu Hospital in Neiafu. Three passengers including one female and two men were released but the victim and the male driver 'Atu Tahifote (32) who owned the vehicle remained in hospital.

This brings the road deaths to eight from January to date in comparison to 12 road deaths reported around the same time last year.

Suicide

A 28-year-old male committed suicide after drinking poison chemical at his home in Pelehake around midnight on Friday 30 November.
