Preliminary Inquiry date set for Kali Fungavaka case [1]

The Preliminary Inquiry of five Tongan police officers and one civilian charged with manslaughter has been set for February 25-27, at the Nuku'alofa Magistrate's Court.

The accused have been charged with manslaughter with an alternative charge of causing grevious bodily harm, in relation to the death of a New Zealand Police Officer, Kali Fungavaka, who was fatally injured while in detention on August 17.

Accused Inspector Kelepi Hala'ufia, who was the supervising officer on the night of August 17, is represented by Palu Taufateau. While Siosifa Tu'utafaiva is understood to be representing the civilian Semisi Kalisitiane Manu, and police constables Fatai Faletau, Salesi Maile and Manu Tu'ivai. Tevita Vakalahi are represented by 'Ofa Pouono.

The Acting Solicitor General Sione Sisifa said, the six accused appeared in chambers on Friday morning, November 2, at the Magistrate's office. The date was set for the hearing to be held over three-days, and their bail has been extended until 25 February 2012.
