Manslaughter case adjourned to October 1 [1]

Semisi Kalisitiane Manu who is charged with manslaughter in relation to the death of New Zealand Police Officer Kali Fungavaka appeared at the Nuku'alofa Magistrate's Court this morning and his case was adjourned to Chambers, on Monday October 1.

Crown Prosecutor Sione Sisifa asked for the case to be adjourned to Monday, as they were still reviewing the evidence and to decide on the next course of action.

Semisi who remains in police custody, was a detainee kept in the same cell as the victim on the night of August 17, at the Nuku'alofa Central Police Station.

Meanwhile, the two policemen Salesi Maile and Fatai Faletau who are each charged with common assault of Kali Fungavaka are currently out on bail. 

They were released by the lower court on September 3, and are scheduled to appear at the Nuku'alofa Magistrate's Court on Monday, October 1.

Magistrate Pita Soakimi ruled that Semisi's case be adjourned to chamber on Monday.

Kali Fungavaka died on Thursday, August 23 at Vaiola Hospital after receiving fatal injuries while being held in police custody on the night of August 17, after he was arrested for minor drunkeness.
