Sacked Chief Secretary to sue Public Service Commission [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Friday, August 17, 2012 - 21:54.  Updated on Monday, September 9, 2013 - 18:40.

Busby Kautoke, the former Chief Secretary and the Secretary to Cabinet, is taking legal action to challenge the termination of his Contract of Employment by the Public Service Commission, that was announced on August 8, but was effective from 6 April 2012.

In a statement yesterday, August 16, Busby claimed that the termination of his contract was unlawful.

He said that the PSC brought charges against him, relating "to the keeping of vouchers for the purposes of a pilot scheme by the Ministry of Finance to effect partial devolution of financial management to the Prime Minister's Office. . . ." He said that records in paper forms were kept at the Prime Minister's Office, but a computerized version under a system known as "Sun System" was maintained by the Ministry of Finance.

When Busby was suspended from the most senior post in the Public Service, by the Public Service Commission on 5 April 2012, the Acting Chief Secretary, Alfred Soakai said that suspension allowed Busby to clarify his position against the charges that had been brought against him.

Busby, a prominent public servant, was appointed as the Chief Secretary and the Chief Secretary to Cabinet under the government of Lord Feleti Sevele.
