Fourteen line Ministries under a restructured government came into being in July, with the Prime Minister currently acting as the Minister for Police and for Defence.

The Acting Chief Secretary and Secretary to Cabinet Paula Ma'u said this afternoon that although there are 14 Ministries there are only 12 Ministers, as required by law.

He said Hon. Clive Edwards is the Minister for Justice and also Minister for Public Enterprises.

Lord Tu'ivakano, the Prime Minister also holds the portfolio for the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade. 

The Prime Minister is currently acting as the Minister for Police following the resignation of Sunia Fili in June, while the Tonga Defence Services a separate agency from line ministries also reports to him as Minister.

The new Ministry for Internal Affairs covers the youth, employment, sports, culture, women's affairs and local government including Governor's offices and district/town officers.

The new Ministry for Infrastructure includes the transport sector of land, civil aviation, marine and ports, coastal, meteorological services and works.
