Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Tuesday, June 19, 2012 - 16:22.  Updated on Monday, September 9, 2013 - 18:40.

A letter with a motion for a Vote of No Confidence in the Prime Minister was presented to the Speaker of the Tongan Parliament, Lord Lasike, yesterday, June 18, the Chief Clerk of the House, Sione Tekiteki confirmed this afternoon.

He said that the letter was signed by 'Akilisi Pohiva and the motion for the Vote of No Confidence in the Prime Minister was signed by some members of parliament, and he did not want to reveal their names, since the Vote of No confidence had not been moved in the House.

Sione said that the Speaker informed parliament this morning, June 19 of vote of no confidence in the Prime Minister, but he said that according to the constitution such a motion "shall not be moved unless at least five working days' notice of the intention to move such a motion has been given to the Speaker."

Meanwhile, the House has started debate on the national budget for 2012-13, and Sione was confident that House would not be dealing with the Vote of No Confidence until the national budget was passed, probably before the end of June.

The Prime Minister, Lord Tu'ivakano was elected in December 2010.
