Crowd of 10,000 fills Teufaiva for inter-college sports [1]

The 58th Annual Inter-Collegiate Athletic Sports competition began today with top athletes finally meeting up close to compete in the three day track and field events, filling Teufaiva Stadium with a capacity crowd of over 10,000. Photos by Linny Folau.
The morning began with joyous marching from 15 sports teams from Tongatapu's local high schools, and three teams from the outer islands of Vava'u, Ha'apai and ‘Eua, in sunny weather with a light breeze.
The track and field events for the day kicked off with the 1,500metres running in the Girls Intermediate, Open and Senior Grades. Followed by the boys running also in the 1,500metres in the Intermediate, Open and Senior Grades.
Hurdles were next on the track with the 80m, 100m and 110m hurdles in both the boys and girls grades of Midget to Senior.
In the field events the Open Boys and Girls began the first round of the competition with the high jump and long jump, followed by the Intermediate Girls and Boys shot put and discus and the Junior boy...s pole vault.
Other track and field events to follow during the day were the 400m and 4x400m in both girls and boys division.
Medals will be awarded to the winners in each event on a daily basis.
