The TOP$118 million reconstruction of the Nuku'alofa Central Business District CBD was completed on Friday 30 March, according to Mr Yang, the manager of the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation CCECC, the main contractor for the whole reconstruction project.
Mr Yang said that they are planning to hand over the key of the last building that they have just completed, the Tungi Arcade Building, to the Free Wesleyan Church in April, but a ceremony to mark the completion of the reconstruction of the Nuku'alofa CBD has been scheduled for the first week of July.
"I am happy with the quality of our work, as some people have expressed to me that they are very happy with the improved roads and new car park spaces in the CBD. I am also glad that the project is finally done after three years of working non-stop."
He said that the construction of the Tungi Arcade Building and a car park were completed before the state funeral of King George Tupou V on March 27. "The only work left is to clean up the surrounding areas of the Tungi Arcade site, which should be all done during the next few days," he said.
Constructions that were completed under the Nuku'alofa CBD reconstruction project , included the Taumoepeau Building, OG Sanft Building, City Assets (Molisi Tonga Building), the renovation of the Royal Palace, Royco Building, the Vuna Wharf and civil works which included roads works repair, drainage and a public car park.
The reconstruction of the Nuku'alofa CBD was carried out by the main contractor, the CCECC, and two sub contractors, Cabelloa Construction Ltd and Fletcher Construction Ltd.
