Youth awaits marijuana sentencing [1]

Kelepi Maile 19, changed his plea to guilty for the possession of a tiny amount of marijuana, when he appeared in the Nuku‘alofa Supreme Court on March 29.

The court was told that on June 9, 2004, at Vaini, Kelepi and four other youths, ranging in age from 18 to 21 years, were found to be in possession of four small amounts of cannabis, weighing 0.221 grams.

Kelepi first appeared in the Nuku...’alofa Supreme court on October 22, 2004, and pleaded not guilty. The four other youths who pleaded guilty were put on community service, but a hearing date for Kelepi was set for March 29.

Kelepi changed his plead from not guilty to guilty and Justice Ian Thomas adjourned the case until April 13 when he will pass his decision.

Mele Tupou was the counsel for the Crown and the accused represented himself.

Mele said that the marijuana was wrapped in lolly size bags.
