Bank employee charged with embezzlement of $40,000 [1]

A former female employee at the Westpac Bank of Tonga branch has been released on bail after she was charged by police with 18 counts of embezzlement.
Police Prosecutor Mema Latu said the defendant appeared before the Nuku'alofa Magistrate's Court on February 27 and was released on bail until her next court appearance on March 30.
He said the charges alleged that she committed the offences numerous times last year and stole up to $40,000 pa'anga.
Acting Police Commissioner Soakai Motu'apuaka said police were alerted to the crime this year following a complaint from the bank, and their investigation was ongoing.
