With less than two months to go before completion date, the Nuku'alofa Central Business District Reconstruction Project financed with a TOP$118 million loan from china, is on track to be completed by March 31, the Project  Manager  Mr Yang said.

Reconstruction works nearing completion, included the Tungi Arcade, the road works for asphalt concrete pavement of the central business district roads, a car park in central Nuku'alofa, and the paving of a road connecting Vuna Wharf to Hala Vuna.

Construction works already completed, included the Taumoepeau Building, O.G. Sanft Building, Molisi Tonga Building, the renovation of the Royal Palace, and the Vuna Wharf reconstruction.

Mr Yang said the Tungi Arcade reconstruction should be done by mid-March. The paving of concrete on the road at Vuna Wharf will be finished by the end of this month, if there is not too much rain.

The China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation is the main contractor, with two sub contractors, the Cabella Construction Ltd. and Fletcher Construction Ltd.

The reconstruction of the Nuku'alofa Central Business District began to take shape when the Tonga government signed a loan from China on 19 November 2007, a year to the month after the Nuku'alofa CBD was burned during riots on 16 November 2006.

A year later on 18 November 2008, there was a ground breaking ceremony on the area that is now going to be a car park in central Nuku'alofa.

Two years later, on 19 November 2010, the former Prime Minister Dr Feleti Sevele and the Chinese Ambassador to Tonga HE Mr Fan Guijin presented keys to the owners of the first three buildings to be completed under the reconstruction program, the Taumoepeau Building, the O. G. Sanft building and the Royco Building.
