Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Friday, March 18, 2005 - 16:30.  Updated on Thursday, May 8, 2014 - 16:45.

The March 17 Parliamentary Election remains strongly on the front page of all newspapers that were published in Tonga this week - the Tonga Star, Taimi ...‘o Tonga, Talaki and the Ko e Kele'a.

...‘Akilisi Pohiva and Clive Edwards shared equally in the limelight, ...‘Akilisi in the Kele'a and the Taimi, and Clive in the Tonga Star and the Talaki.

In the Tonga Star, Clive shared the front page with the former Editor of the Star, Sangster Saulala, a candidate for the Vava...’u election. In the Talaki, Clive had it all to himself with the Crown Prince Tupouto'a intensifying the impact.

The Taimi featured 'Akilisi and Futa on its front page.

The Kele'a featured ...‘Akilisi, Feleti Sevele and ...‘Isileli Pulu prominently with an appeal to the people for their support in votes.

Besides campaigning stories the Tonga Star ran a story on a move by the new Minister of Police Hon. Cecil Cocker to set up a spy network for Tonga in affiliation with the SIS of New Zealand. Also featured in the Star is a story on the arrival of the first Chinese shop owners in the remote island of Niuatoputapu in northern Tonga. There was a mixed reaction, and while the Chinese were welcomed by the government representative on the island, there was opposition from local shop owners.
