New Year weddings slow down for Friday 13th [1]

New Year weddings are popular in Tonga with 36 marriages registered in the week 5-13 January - but only three couples tied the knot on Friday the 13th.

The Registry Office at Nuku'alofa reported that Thursday, January 12 was the busiest day with 21 marriages, the highest so far this year.

An official at the Nuku'alofa Registry Office said that it had been a trend over the years for couples get married either just before Christmas before government closes for their Christmas holidays, or when the registry opens after the New Year holidays, with Tuesdays and Thursdays being the most popular days.
