41-year-old man charged for wharf shooting [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Friday, April 16, 2010 - 17:36.  Updated on Monday, September 9, 2013 - 18:40.

A 41-year-old man has been charged with attempted armed robbery relating to the shooting that wounded a 56-year-old man at the American Wharf on Friday April 9.

The Deputy Commander of Police Taniela Faletau in his Crime Report this week said that the assailant had turned himself in to the police at 7pm on the same day.

He appeared at the Magistrate's Court on Monday and was ordered to be detained in police custody.

Faletau said the firearm used was a .22 rifle registered to another person and police were investigating why it was in the assailant's possession.

On the early morning of April 9, three men and a woman were in a vehicle at the wharf when the armed man threatened them with the rifle demanding their wallets.

The three men tried to overcome the assailant and one of them was shot. The assailant then fled the scene on foot leaving the rifle and his vehicle behind.

The Deputy Commander said the victim was treated at Vaiola Hospital and discharged the same day.

The assailant resides in Vaini and Ma'ufanga in Tongatapu.
