Dr Sam Wang dies in Tonga [1]

Hong Kong businessman Dr Sam Wang, the owner of the Royal Tonga International Hotel at Fua'amotu died in Tongatapu from natural causes on May 8.

Dr Wang is reported to have been staying at his hotel in Tonga for over a month before being rushed to the Vaiola Hospital in Nuku'alofa late on Friday night.

The Outpatients Ward at Vaiola confirmed that Dr Wang was dead on arrival at the hospital at around 1:05 am Saturday May 8. Dr Wang was believed to have suffered from a heart condition and was battling cancer.

Dr Wang's last public engagement in Tongatapu was during the official opening of the Royal Tonga International Hotel by King George Tupou V on October 9, 2007.

The hotel was 15 years in construction after its groundbreaking ceremony was held on April 7, 1992.

During the opening ceremony it was said that the hotel was completed with a total investment of about $60 million.

When Dr Wang first came to Tonga in the 1990s he was known as Dr Wong.
