Mafua Kiokata of Nukunuku and Paumolevuka Tu'i of Talafo'ou received new wheelchairs from community fundraising.

There were smiles on the faces of Paumolevuka Tu'i of Talafo'ou and Mafua Kiokata of Nukunuku when they received two new wheelchairs and commodes that would make life a lot easier and mobile for them, following a tragic road accident that left the two sportsmen paralysed two years ago.

The two young former players for Tonga's National Aussie Rules team suffered severe spinal injuries after they were hit by a vehicle while jogging on Taufa'ahau Road at Ha'ateiho on August 20, 2008. They will never walk again after the accident that left them paralysed from the waist down.

Pau now 20 years old and Mafua (24) looked well as they were sitting up on their wheelchairs accompanied by their parents who were overjoyed that the Tongan community and AFL Tonga had continued to provide support for the boys.

Dr 'Amanaki Fakakovikaetau said the two black wheelchairs were for the boys daily use while the commode mobile chairs are for showering and toilet use.

Michael O'Shannassy presents wheelchairs to Mafua Kiokata of Nukunuku and Paumolevuka Tu'i of Talafo'ou.

Michael O'Shannassy, the President of the Aussie Rules Tonga handed over the gifts to the two boys at Vaiola Hospital. He said that a Trust Fund, for the boys had reached $17,000 pa'anga from general fundraisings by the local business community.

"The new wheelchairs and commodes made in Australia cost around $13,000 pa'anga and we are planning to hold more fundraising in the future so as to continue our support for the boys," he said.

Michael also acknowledged the assistance provided by businesses in Tonga such as Fletcher Royco who had modified each of the two boys homes with ramps that would enable them to move freely in their new wheelchairs.

"We just hope that this brings the boys comfort and makes life a lot easier for them instead of just lying in bed and it will ease of the cost for their families," he added.

Timote Tu'i, Pau's father, thanked Michael and those who helped with the wheelchairs and extended thanks to Australia and AFL for all their continued support following the tragic accident.
