Two lured to gunpoint robbery at wharf [1]

TWO Asian persons residing in Tongatapu were robbed and held at gunpoint early Saturday morning, May 29 at the Tu'imatamoana Wharf on Vuna Road.

Police today said that two offenders remained at large and police were following positive leads to identify the persons concerned and appreciated the support of the public.

Deputy Police Commander Taniela Faletau confirmed that between 6:30-7am on May 29 two Tongan male persons held up two Asian persons at the wharf after they were lured to the area in order to buy sea cucumber, when the robbery took place.

Police are not releasing details of the cash amount but the robbery was clearly orchestrated to lure the two victims to the area, he said.

Assault

In addition on the same evening, May 29 at about 10pm a male offender assaulted a male and female shopkeeper assistant in a shop at Fatafehi Road in Nuku'alofa.

The offender tried to steal a cash bag but was prevented by another staff member. He then fled on his vehicle from the area.

The Deputy Commander confirmed that police knew the identity of the offender and would make an arrest soon.

He said that the Police were aware there were a number of people who witnessed the offender and would appreciate further information that will assist in his apprehension.
