The Australian Acting High Commissioner to Fiji Ms Sarah Roberts has been expelled from Fiji.

Richard Naidu reported in the Fijilive news website on July 13 that the Fijian Foreign Affairs Minister Ratu Inoke Kubuabola said that Ms Sarah Roberts had been declared a persona non-grata.

"Fiji had exhausted all avenues and on numerous occasions we have relayed our concerns to the Acting High Commissioner, Ms Roberts," Kubuabola said.

Kubuabola said Roberts was advised to stop interfering in Fiji's domestic affairs, as Fiji is a sovereign nation.

Ratu Inoke Kubuabola said that Ms Roberts' expulsion was based on recent reports that Roberts had been interfering with the internal affairs of Fiji and conducting unfriendly acts.

He said that the Australian government had been engaged in "strategies to undermine Fiji's sovereignty and weaken the economy", which he claimed was further highlighted by Australia calling on Melanesia Spearhead Group (MSG) countries, especially Vanuatu, not to attend the MSG Leaders Summit in Fiji this weekend.

According to Kubuabola, most non-MSG member countries had already accepted the invitation to attend.

"Australia has no business in the MSG leaders' summit but has continued to discourage MSG member states."

He said this is evident in the increase in aid from Australia in its 2010-2011 budget to the Pacific under which the Vanuatu government will receive $66.4 million in special aid from Australia, the highest ever in the country's aid from Australia.

Ms Sarah Roberts is the second Australian diplomat to be expelled from Fiji since last year.
