Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Friday, August 27, 2010 - 19:12.  Updated on Monday, September 9, 2013 - 18:40.

TONGA'S 9th military contingent deployed to the Solomon Islands returns home tonight Friday August 27, after completing four months of peacekeeping duties under the Regional Assistance Mission RAMSI.

Deputy Commander Toni Fonokalafi confirmed that all 32 members of the military contingent would arrive tonight at Fua'amotu International Airport, onboard an Australian Airforce aircraft from Honiara.

The contingent would include the soldiers that were alleged to have shot dead a Solomon Islander in Titinge on August 12.

The Deputy Commander recently returned from the Solomons with Solicitor General 'Aminiasi Kefu on Saturday, August 21 after being sent by the Tongan Government to look into the shooting incident.

He did not comment on the issue as the matter has been directed to the Prime Minister but he confirmed that Tonga would be conducting its own investigation into the incident.

Tonga's next and 10th deployment to the Solomon is anticipated for December this year.
