At a function held at the Australian High Commissioner's residence, last night, Taiatu welcomed Masao Soakai, one of the founding members of the club, a past president and Honourary Rotary member. "Masao was visionary and committed to establishing a Rotary Club in Nuku'alofa after attending a Rotary meeting in Waga Waga Australia. Today Masao is not only the oldest member but one of the dearest and loved members of the club," said Taiatu.

Two other long standing members who had devoted many hours of their time experience and resources to the Rotary Club of Nuku'alofa were Afu'alo Matot oand Steve Finau, both past Presidents, she said.

The club undertakes small scale community projects with support of the business sector, NGOs and the government, particularly in the areas of education, medical and fire services in Tonga.

Rotary has also established a Quality Service Award program in partnership wit the Tonga Chamber of Commerce to recognise excellence in youth leadership, customer service, and best employees.

At last night's function a new Rotary member, Patricia Hepworth, was inducted, becoming one of the world's first new Rotary members for the start of its second century.
