King George Tupou V issues Writs of Election [1]

Accordingly, the Electoral Commission has set the nomination of candidates to be held on Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd October, 2010 from 10:00 in the morning until 3:00 in the afternoon at the Office of the Electoral Commission in the case of Tongatapu, at the Governor’s Office in the case of Vava'u and Ha'apai, and at the Offices of Government Representatives respectively in the case of 'Eua, Niuatoputapu and Niuafo'ou.

The Commission strongly urges all candidates to ensure that their nomination forms and all other requirements are completed before they are submitted. Each candidate must meet the following qualifications:
- Be registered as an elector in the constituency nominated for;

- To complete and sign the Nomination Form ;

- Have 50 or more persons on the register of voters for the constituency nominate/propose you as a Candidate;

- Provide written clearance from the Supreme Court that there is no record of an outstanding order relating to you under clause 65 of the Constitution;

- Provided written clearance from the Magistrates Court that there is no record of an outstanding order relating to you under clause 65 of the Constitution; and

- Be able to deposit $400 in either cash or a bank cheque drawn
on a bank registered or operating in Tonga with the Returning Officer at the time of nomination.

The Supervisor of Elections, Pita Vuki says "it is important that all nomination documents are completed by the candidate considering the time available for the registration process to take place. The nomination times and dates will be strictly adhered to and it is suggested that you nominate early to allow time to resubmit your nomination if it is incomplete".
