With less than a month before Tongans go to the polls to elect their new leaders in a new system on November 25, the theme "Good Governance" was chosen for this year's Tonga Law Week to be held from November 7-12.

Tonga's Solicitor General 'Aminiasi Kefu, said on October 29 that the annual law week is aimed at stimulating discussion with the public to create a better understanding of the law, in order to maintain law and order in the community.

The theme on good governance was chosen with regards to the Political Reform in November.

"It’s a new epoch for Tonga to have a new governing system in place and the Minister and Ministry of Justice thought it was important that people are reminded on the importance of good governance."

He said the issues of good governance included accountability in regards to leaders to performing their duties to the people. If there were any wrongdoings in their duties then they are held accountable and dealt with accordingly.

"There needs to be more transparency from the leaders," he added

"This week is set aside for all of us, especially those who are leaders and our future leaders, to reflect on the importance of good governance."

The Law Week programs will include talk back shows on Radio Tonga, visits by legal staff to primary and secondary schools and poster and poetry competitions and speeches on good governance.
