Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Wednesday, December 1, 2010 - 18:13.  Updated on Monday, September 9, 2013 - 18:40.

POLICE in Tonga are currently investigating a candidate for overspending following a complaint lodged by the Electoral Commission in Nuku'alofa.

Under the Electoral Act 2010, candidates are limited to campaign spending of $10,000 pa'anga each. Candidates are required to file with the Electoral Commission an election spending statement 14 days after the election on November 25.

Police Commander Chris Kelley said once candidates' filed their costs associated with their campaign as required under the Electoral Act, they would continue to evaluate it and see what evidence had been filed.

Police were also continuing to investigate a complaint of defamation and breach of the electoral regulations in Vava'u. The Commander did not disclose the name of the candidate or any further information at this stage.

He thanked the public in ensuring the General Election held last week on November 25 was a peaceful and safe process.
