Secret Ballot for Tonga's new PM postponed to 10am Tuesday [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Monday, December 20, 2010 - 20:38.  Updated on Monday, September 9, 2013 - 18:40.

AFTER the speeches by Members of Parliament and the two nominees for Prime Minister Designate were completed late this afternoon, the Interim Speaker Lord Tupou was informed that the King would not be available to receive him today.

Instead of moving ahead with the vote for Prime Minister and leaving the secrecy of the results to the clerks overnight, it was instead decided to postpone the ballot for tomorrow morning, 10:00am Tuesday 21 December 2010.

The Legislative Assembly's Special Meeting to Elect a Prime Minister adjourned at around 4.45pm for the night.

Tomorrow, after the secret ballot is taken to chose a Prime Minister, the result will be given to the king first before it is announced to the Legislature.

There are two nominees, Lord Tu'ivakano and 'Akilisi Pohiva.
